Sad news indeed .
A great DJ, with a vast knowledge of a wide range of music, something of a champion of bands trying to make it and, dare I say it, something of an institution at the Beeb.
I remember him championing reggae in the mid-70s, where not many years before he'd been looking down his nose at it.

I remember that too Zap, but he soon changed his mind didn't he?
after all the boring psychedelic stuff he used to play in late 1960's and early 1970's I think he began to realise what he had been missing after all.
I know one of his favourites in the Reggae world was Misty In Roots "Live at the Countervision", but he did do the Peel sessions and had quite a few Reggae Acts on that series.
Maybe he didn't start out with the love of the music but Jamaican Music needed all the friends it could at the BEEB & at least the Indie, punk and other styles of music followers got to hear some of the delights of the music through his show. |

| I remember him playing 'Sentimental Reason' by the Maytones in 1980. A first on radio I imagine. Sad news indeed as I was only reading an interview with him in a newspaper about a week or so ago. |

| Respect to John Peel a legend who will be surely missed. I remember him for getting the best out of Aswad, can remember tuneing in once and catching a rock hard deep roots session, nearly fell of my chair when Peel thanked Aswad for their session tonight!!!!!! Still havent been able to find anything on wax as hard as the stuff they did for him. |

I just read this thread before going CD shopping today. Lo & behold, I came across a cd by Aswad, "The BBC Sessions" (Strange Fruit, 1997), 13 tracks, including:
John Peel Sessions 10/8/76
1. Natural Progression
2. Back To Africa
3. Can't Stand The Pressure
John Peel Session 10/10/78
4. Behold
The other sessions (non-Peel) were from '82, '83, '84 & '88.
Needless to say, I had to pick it up (haven't listened to it yet though). |
