Hey everyone. Just stumbled across this classy place and thought that I'd mosey on in.
I've been into reggae for years, starting where so many of us do with Bob Marley (God). I decided pretty early on that I his earlier stuff was what I really enjoyed. So I started exploring.
Currently really enjoying The Paragons (just got the On The Beach cd anthology thing), Desmond Dekker, The Maytals, The Melodians, and The Skatalites.
I'm a big fan of first and second wave ska, most dub rocksteady and reggae. But don't so much like ragga and dancehall.
I was wondering what you all thought of the direction the collective reggae/roots genre is taking these days. Any favourite bands/artists doing amazing things right now? _________________ Grant |

Any favourite bands/artists doing amazing things right now? | Welcome to the forum, Grant - I see you enjoy some of the best of the early artists...just had a thought - I wonder if these are classed as true "foundation" artists (I'm sure they've been advertised on the radio and on posters as such), since DD and the Maytals didn't start recording until 63-ish, say - the Skatalites in '64 - though they'd all been recorded way before then and the Melodians a little later.
Not a fan of Ragga at all, though I don't mind a bit of Dancehall from right across the ages.
When it comes to newer stuff, I'm certainly no expert and only buy stuff having actually heard it in a shop, or based on recommendations here or in other forums - my latest new album wa Chezidek's INNA DI ROAD, from last year on Greensleeves - and very nice it is too _________________ In love or in sympathy with someone. Cheers Zapatoo!
Although my listening does lean heavily toward the earlier stuff or perhaps more accurately 60's and 70's Jamaican music. I do have a few recommendations.
The Dynamic thrills are my favourite new reggae/mix genre band because they seem to have such a great genuine quality to them. Which I think is lacking with a lot of similar bands around at the moment.

Chezidek seems classy. I was reminded of Junior Kelly for some reason, which is strange cause they're not very similar. Rasta Should Be Deeper is an excellent song. _________________ Grant |

Thanks for the link, GFC - I have just a sprinkling of Jr. Kelly out of which my favourite or at least, the one that I like that springs to mind, is THINK I'M SUCH A FOOL (on a version of the Shank I Sheck rhythm)...then I remembered it's actually by Jr. Reid

Hey Karl, I'm going to Raggamuffin 2010 for my first time. Haven't really been interested in the past but because I'm not getting to a few other gigs this year thought I'd go check it out. _________________ Grab a coke, crack a joke and put on your dancing shoes >>> GO FEET! Radio

I wonder how many of Jimmy's goals at Spurs were "assisted" by AG? Quite a few I bet. _________________ If we can't be free at least we can be cheap. |

I saw some in the latter half of the 60s.
However, the first game I went to at White Hart Lane was in early April 1967 against Liverpool.
Spurs were in the middle of a 30-game unbeaten run (including the FA Cup) which would see them lift the trophy at Wembley and finish in 3rd. place in the old First Division behind champions Manchester United (nothing changes then?) and runners-up Nottingham Forest.
I don't think Gilly assisted in either of Greavsie's goals on that day.
The first was direct from a corner kick, which JG took left-footed from the right-hand side. It seems that "Venners", always a bit of a joker, shouted (in a poor Scouse accent) to Liverpool full-back Chris Lawler, who was covering the near post to "Leave it!", thus allowing the ball drop nicely into the ol' onion bag.
That was towards the end of the first half, I reckon.
In the second half (maybe midway through), there was a hoof out of defence, JG outran the Liverpool defence and with his right foot this time, high-lobbed Tommy Lawrence from just outside the box - the crowd fell silent as the ball came down just in front of the goal line and bounced up into the roof of the net
Liverpool grabbed a late consolation (no idea who netted) and as usual, Spurs were hanging on for the last few minutes. _________________ In love or in sympathy with someone. Having a party fun or fête then rush for a Halagala record.
